Legends Golf & Safari-South Africa

Legends Golf & Safari in South Africa
February 2012

This resort is home to the unique “world-in-one” Signature Course where each of the 18 holes has been designed by a world golfing legend.  This is a golf and safari resort, although we did only the golf.  They are know for their "19" hole.

Rick standing at the entrance of the "19" hole golf course, which has the longest par in the world.

Some of the most famous Golfers in the world helped design this course and others played here.  Above is a list of each famous golfer, although it's hard to view.

Accessible only by helicopter, they take you to the top of the  majestic Hanglip Mountain.  This is where we te off.  The ride in the helicopter alone is spectular.  The Heli pilot was told I was a little scared of heights, so he "threw" in a little excitement for me, although still safe, I wasn't sure that I should of worn light colored pants!!!  Just kidding, but the ride was awesome and view was beautiful.

Rick teeing off one of his 5 balls.
This is the longest Par 3 in the world!
  • Vertical Height – 430m ( 1410 feet)
  • Horizontal distance from foot of mountain to back of green – 400m (1312 feet)
  • Horizontal distance from foot of mountain to start of fairway – 280m (918 feet)
  • The vertical drop from the start of fairway to the front of the green is 21m. (69 feet)
  • Time for ball to land – 20 seconds
None of Rick's balls landed on the fairway, but would have if they would of gone straight.  That's pretty good.
Because I'm scared of heights, as I mentiond before, I stood at the back of the green mat.  There's no barriers, borders, handrails, nothing.  You fall, it's over.  I was scared, I'd swing, twirl and drop.  Yikes, it's pretty scary up there.  Beautiful, but scary.  I must admit, my balls didn't go as far as Rick's, but they were straight.  The Pro said, if there was a little wind, my balls would of landed on the fairway.  Not sure if he was being polite, but I'll take it...
View from the top of mountain, looking onto green.  This is what we need to hit.  Notice the green is shaped like Africa, then there's Madagascar to the right.

That's as far to the edge as Rick could get me for a picture.  I wasn't  backing up any farther.

Rick a lot braver.  At lease you can see the green below.

Now back at bottom of mountain on 19th green.

Just before we enter our room, we were greeted by some warthog heads.  I thought maybe some potted flowers would of been nice.

Our room.  One of the nicest rooms ever.

And of course the bathroom.  Why does one take pictures of the bathroom?
Went back to our hotel room and guess who we found outside our door!
Later on that evening on our way back from supper, we ran into this guy on the road, and he wasn't moving.  I guess that's why they call them "King of the Jungle".  He looked at us as if to say "Get lost".  We waited a few minutes, then thought best to leave.
Upon leaving the resort, we took a picture.  They strategically placed the opening of the resort between the mountain of the 19th hole.  At the top of that mountain is where we were teeing off for the 19th hole.  Pretty amazing.  Would definately recomment it.

Rick had to take a picture of the Legend Hotel key and car we rented.  Forget what kind of car, but it was nice.  (Rick and all the other car buffs are going to go crazy for this comment, heehee)
